Hallerrrr! i mean, ggggrrrrrrrr...!

I am sooooo pissed off about this prepaid card scam. I just read an email from my friend in the philippines informing me that one of our friends was victimized by this hacker who is using my identity.

I already wrote to Inquirer, ABS-CBN and GMA7 asking them to make an article/news or a warning about this scam.

Read the articles below and please forward this email to your friends so that they will be warned about this scam proliferating now in the Philippines.

Yahoo Messenger scamBeware of scammers who use Yahoo! Messenger (YM) to lure victims to invest in a fake prepaid load business. If the potential victim decides not to join the “venture,” the scammer then attempts to hack that person’s Yahoo account.

Here’s how the modus operandi works.

Using a hacked Yahoo! account of someone who has you in his/her Friends list, the scammer contacts and chats with you via YM. The scammer tries to gain your trust by talking about your friend’s work and by mentioning people you both know. Apparently, the scammer has already learnt about these things by reading your friend’s emails.

He then proposes that you join him in a potentially lucrative prepaid loading business. One victim’s experience involved a scammer — who pretended to be the friend who works as a flight attendant — supposedly needing P10,000 (US$220) worth of load credits. The load, the scammer explains, is sold at almost 100% profit to other Filipinos abroad who need prepaid load.

If you agree, the scammer asks you to send load to a cellphone number. One number used for this scam was +639169244100, but other numbers are certainly in use. Once the load is sent, you will not hear from the scammer and you ultimately lose money.

If you decide not to send load, however, the scammer then attempts to hack your Yahoo! account by redirecting to a phishing site. (An example of how a Phishing site works is explained in this fake e-gold site article.) The scammer, still pretending to be your friend, invites you to view his pictures posted in a fake Flickr website. Once you log in, the scammer uses the information to hack your Yahoo! account.

Armed with a new hacked account, the scammer contacts the friends listed in your YM Address Book and attempts to dupe them using the same modus operandi.

Don’t be a victim! Don’t fall for this scam!

Yahoo! Messenger Phishing Scam

Yahoo! messenger phishing scam attempts are hardly new. However there are undoubtedly a number of you out there who may not be aware of just how clever some of these scams can be. Unlike scams of the past in Yahoo! IM, this time around they are coming from people who are actually in your contact list.

Protecting yourself:

  • Never open up a recommended URL from instant messenger, even from friends (Windows users). Remember that IM messages can be spoofed. Consider setting up a ’special keyword’ ahead of time with friends to be used that frequently send you links.
  • While following the advice above (Windows), you may also opt to protect yourself even further with a non-Yahoo provided app for your Yahoo IM chatting. (Windows and Linux - Mac users)
  • Trust no one, always be suspicious. Anytime anyone, anywhere online is asking for personal information - stop. Call the person immediately to verify if this is really that person. If it is, explain that you will not be providing any personal info over the incredibly insecure protocol provided by Yahoo!
  • Rememeber, Yahoo! is still very much behind, despite efforts with its email services.

A filipino hacker in now currently roaming around yahoo messenger using hacked yahoo accounts. He/She will be  proposing a prepaid card business to you. Once na nag-login kayo using your yahoo account. Mahahack na yun account mo, at yun mga nasa ym list mo, naman ang posibleng susunod na biktima. Marami na tong nabiktima. Ingat lang at baka kayo ang susunod na mabiktima.

This is one of the victim's post on her blog
Our own article about it can be found here
May idea ba kayo kung kanino pwede ito pa-investigate or pa-huli? Boxing - Pacqiuao Ngayon ko lang nalaman na wala pa pala tayong cybercrime law. So these people are just roaming around and looking for possible victims freely.
